Transportation Options

The Nation’s Capital is one of the easiest cities to navigate and a terrific city for touring, once you understand the basics.  With one of the safest, cleanest and most efficient public transportation systems, Washington, D.C.’s many attractions and neighborhoods are easily accessible. 

Airports 

Note:  This airport is the closest to GW and the most convenient to travel by when relying on public transportation.  The Ronald Reagan National Airport is only a 10-15 minute Metro ride on the Blue Metro Line, which has two stops on GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus.  Metro travel directions from this airport are available through this link.

Note:  This airport is accessible via a combination of MetroRail and MetroBus service.  For specific details on how to travel to and from the Washington Dulles International Airport, please visit the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Web site at:  http://www.metroopensdoors.com/  

Note:  This airport is accessible via MARC (Maryland Transit Administration) or Amtrak Train that depart from Union Station.  The train ride is about 30-40 minutes.  Union Station can be accessed via the Metro and is about 15 minutes away from campus.  MARC trains do not run on Saturdays or Sundays.  Metro travel directions from this airport are available though this link.

Buses

These buses provide service to a variety of locations, both in the city and metropolitan area, depending on the company.

For the easiest way to plan a trip around the city, consult the Metro Trip Planner on the WMATA homepage linked above.

Parking is available at the following Metro stations: Shady Grove, Rockville, Twinbrook, White Flint, Grosvenor, Rhode Island Avenue, Fort Totten, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton, Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, East Falls Church, Stadium-Armory, Capitol Heights, Addison Road, Minnesota Avenue, Deanwood, Cheverly, Landover, New Carrollton, Huntington, Anacostia, and Van Dorn Street.

The Metro stations closest to GW are Foggy Bottom/GWU Station (23rd and I Streets, NW) and Farragut West Station (18th and I Streets, NW) for the Orange and Blue Lines.  The Foggy Bottom/GWU Station is closest to the New Hall Summer Guest Services Office.

Physically handicapped persons can ride MetroBus and MetroRail for half price with appropriate ID.  For further information, contact Metro Transportation ID Office at (202) 962-1245.
